Wandsworth, London House re-build, basement extension Minale + Mann Architecture + Interiors Minale + Mann Construction 3,700 sqft
Broomwood is a Victorian Terrace home renovation and re-build project located between Wandsworth and Clapham Commons.
The design brief for the project was to re-establish the elegance of the original house, whilst simultaneously maximizing its space to suit the needs of a large growing family. The design approach was centered around the introduction of refined industrial aesthetics, set alongside historically symbolic design references of the Victorian era.
The project involved a full demolition and re-build of the existing house, creating a luxury new build home with a subterranean basement extension below the entire ground floor footprint, and a new loft extension and side return to maximise the overall footprint above ground.
A striking contemporary staircase at the center is the feature of the house. It connects all four floors, creating a vertical tunnel of light that cascades from the light well at the top, down to the lower ground floor, creating a shadowy interplay throughout the day.
The open plan layout of the bottom two floors gives the house a spacious and airy feel. An eight meter void between lower and ground floor acts as a light well, and accentuates the vertical expanse between the two floors.
